Why would I commission a painting?
A commission provides collectors and or designers with original works of art of a particular size, for a certain space, and/or of a specific subject matter.

Does Ann Rea accept all commission requests?
No. Ann Rea does not accept all commission requests. Ann Rea can only complete so many commission requests in a calendar year, so commissions are limited. And, Ann only considers requests that she is inspired to create and that she is confident she can bring her full focus.

Will Ann Rea paint anything that I want?
No. Collectors commission Ann Rea because they are interested and confident in her particular artistic style and approach. Collectors do have several choices of canvas sizes and they are welcome to request Ann's artistic interpretation of a particular subject or place. But unlike a commercial illustrator, who executes another's creative vision, Ann Rea is a fine artist who is hired to express her own.

What tradition does Ann paint in, what is her artistic style?
Ann Rea is reviving the tradition of the French Impressionists, with a contemporary point of view.
Blending old and new world traditions, Ann paints colors inspired by sunlight. With the direct mentorship she received from contemporary painter Wayne Thiebaud (an American Art icon), she paints plein air (in the open air) in the timeless tradition of French Impressionists, like Monet.

Just as Monet painted water lilies in his garden and then returned to his studio to explore and refine these images on a larger scale, Ann creates field studies in the natural landscape and then returns to her Pacific beach studio to create larger renditions on custom canvases. Each piece she paints is a unique and original work of art.

Does Ann paint subjects other than vineyards?
Ann also creates colorful contemporary still life paintings and charcoal sketches on fine Arches French watercolor paper.

Can I commission a rendition of an existing original?
Yes. You can commission a rendition of the best of Ann's existing original field studies. These works are scaled to suit your space. Although each piece is an original work of art, you will have a reasonable expectation of the outcome.

What is a site or subject specific commission?
Original oil paintings that are based upon Ann's artistic vision of a particular place and time or subject are available. These commissions are available for a premium and any additional expenses, including travel and lodging.

What type of mediums does Ann Rea use?
Ann uses pure oil paint on canvas; no mixing mediums, nor turpentine, is ever used. This minimizes toxicity and enhances the color saturation.

Ann even uses the same oil pigments as Van Gough from Old Holland Oil Works established in 1664. Her work also includes charcoal sketches on fine Arches French watercolor paper and pastels on black sandpaper.
